There is no way in protect the climate without changing how we produce energy. According to IEA, In 2018, global CO2 emissions rose by 1.7% to a historic high of 33.1Gt CO2. This is beyond what the planet can dissipate naturally and if it continues, it will eventually lead to complete ecological collapse.
We need to produce renewable energy from natural resources instead of fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero if we are to survive. According to a report from Allied Market Research, the value of the renewable energy market is set to grow from $880 billion in 2020 to nearly $2 trillion by 2030.
New energies such as green hydrogen – a carbon-free fuel - is created by a process involving electrolysis and water and produces zero greenhouse gas emissions. Wind energy - the top renewable energy in 2019 which generates 300 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity annually, is also completely carbon-free. (Source: GWEC, 2019)
Green hydrogen also plays an important role in furthering the development of eco-friendly technology projects in decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors such as long-haul trucking, aviation, and heavy manufacturing. Innovative projects such as the hydrogen powered bikes by Studio MOM and LAVO are super lightweight, yet can carry heavy weight products over long distances.
Digital Transformation is a key component of almost all aspects of life. Continuous technological advancements and innovations are vital to enhancing people’s livelihoods and business efficiency. At HKT, we integrate ethical, social, and environmental considerations into our business practices, as well as contributing to more inclusive and well-connected communities.
With a commitment to long-term sustainable development, HKT has been making continuous efforts to build a sustainable business and address the threat of climate change. We strive to lower our carbon emissions as well as taking part in building a low-carbon economy by adopting renewable energies.
Therefore, we have our own solar panel system which is now in operation on the rooftop of one of our exchange buildings in Tseung Kwan O. It uses monocrystalline solar cells with a module efficiency of 20.3%. We will continue to extend the system in different exchange buildings in the future.
